Much of the layout necessary in a print book is irrelevant in an ebook, e.g. headers and footers.

Some formatting that’s necessary in Word for a printed manuscript is completely irrelevant in the ebook world. These include:

Page size — a Kindle has no “pages” and how much text is shown on the screen is determined by the size the reader chooses for the text. You could format your Word document to be the size of a postage stamp or a billboard and it’s not going to make any difference to what shows up on the Kindle screen.

Margins — while you can indent a paragraph as a <blockquote>, there is no margin per se on the Kindle.

“Sides” — new chapters in a printed book normally start on the right-hand page. The Kindle only shows one “page” at a time so there is no left and right.

Headers and footers — there’s no need for headers and footers in a Kindle ebook. There’s no where for them to go.

A stylesheet (CSS) you can adapt to your book so you don't have to start from scratch.

I have written some CSS for you to use in your book. I’m not suggesting for a moment that you should format your book using your specifications. The CSS will, however, serve as a framework that you can adapt. For most of us it’s easier to change existing CSS to what we want than to start from scratch.

You will see there are various possible classes for your headings, paragraphs, images, captions and so on.

You should first go through your book assigning the right class to the right tags in the book, e.g.:

<p class=”image”>

for images and so on.

Then you can make changes in the CSS to see how they flow through the book, adapting as you go to make sure the book looks as you want it to.

The best way to cement what you’ve learned so far is to see it in action and make changes yourself. You don’t want experiment on your book so I’ve prepared a sample HTML document for you.

The document is the first five chapters of Pride and Prejudice formatted into HTML and with a CSS incorporated into the document. I’m going to give you some things to try. I’m also going to ask you to work out some things yourself using what you’ve learned so far. I have put the answers in the next post but I recommend highly that you try to figure it out for yourself first because you’ll get the most benefit this way.
